I am excited to be learning more about colour through the use of pastels and oil paints. Even though through my photography I am acutely aware of the effect of colour – chroma, and tonality, I have just realised that there is a huge gap in my understanding of this. I have purchased some amazing pastels and oils and have begun experimenting with colour – layering, making large areas of solid colour, making marks and lines – observing the results and the consequent effect these resultant colours have on me. I am learning about tonality more; about darks, mediums and lights, warm and cool tones. I am learning about the effect complementary colours have when placed alongside or in opposition to each other. I am learning about seeing all the not so evident colours in my environment. I am learning to be a more astute observer.
I am enthralled by the vibrancy of the pigments and how colour can be used to express the wonder of our natural environment.
