Road trip – Vauxhall Rally Merimbula

Road trip! On the road again in our beautiful 30-98 E Type Vauxhall on a trip to Merimbula organised by The Vintage Sports Car Club of Australia on a National Veteran and Vintage Vauxhall Rally. This rally was sponsored by the National Trust (NSW).

We met with a fabulous group of Vauxhall enthusiasts who shared their passion and commitment to these remarkable vehicles. I wonder whether the engineers back-in-the-day ever imagined how capable and longstanding these machines would be and how much pleasure they would bring to all those who journey in them!

Our vehicle is magnificent. She has been amazingly restored and amongst the collection of 30 or so other vehicles – was a stand-out. ‘The J’ – as Max and I fondly call her; is beautiful. Her idle needed a bit of attention – but other than that, riding in her was exhilarating… and yes a whole day on the road and 500kms can be quite arduous.

It’s noisy. Max and I don’t really have conversations. Just comments about the smells… the birds… the landmarks… directions…. and when to stop for brunch or a cuppa and cake! We had such yummy food on our road-trip. We managed to score the best cafes – so delicious in fact that we switched to cereal for dinner in our motel room to have an early night after our huge days.

The sky reached into ‘The J’ and the sunlight accompanied our shadow until dark. My memories are striped with textured trunks and dappled light as we drove through mountainous forest. The smell of freshly ploughed soil was rich and comforting.

Rural life scattered the landscape with old timber and bricks; for sale signs; broken windmills; abandoned sheds and shops. It seemed strange driving a car nearly a century old through crumbling towns of the same era. ‘The J’ is one of 6 or seven in Australia and one of only thirty or so remaining in the world. She is an example of remarkable resilience.

History threaded the rally as we visited historical sites around the Eden region – and saw the remnants of the rich nautical history and importance of the ocean and its creatures over the past two centuries. The importance of grazing in Australian history was evident in the 32 room homestead Burnima which is a working homestead yet seems to be displaced and struggling in the path of time.

The rally participants were fun. Such gutsy people. Max and I were invited to deliver presentations during the Saturday evening function; and my video on our Bhutan journey was really well received. I think many were surprised at our adventures – a testament to not only our adventurous spirit, but the wonders of the Vauxhall. I reminded everyone about how gutsy they all are to drive in these exposed old vehicles, without the comforts we are so accustomed to. Everyone also loved Max’s on his journey with James through the Amazon in Penny, our other Vauxhall, Penny 23-60 OD.

Two weeks, 4,000kms in ‘The J’.

Arduous… exhausting… but soooooo much fun!!!!

Thanks to Dave Stewart and his team – John Kent and Justin Coxhead for organising this fabulous rally.

I just adore it!
  • Do you want to NOT go out and just stay home and do the things you want to do; like spinning, weaving, knitting, crafting; but feel like you should be getting dressed out of your pj’s, and going out to at least have a coffee???

You could role play like I did. Follow to see my next ‘outing’.

One can never be overdressed wherever you are! Pop on your bling and do your thing!

So it’s all sorted then?!!
  • Four things I learned from one month not buying yarn. If you’re a weaver, knitter or crocheter, I’ve done all the hard work for you!

Save this for your own reference, and follow to see if I chat to the postman about yarn again!

What I learned-
1. I miss chatting to our postman about yarn.

2. I just don’t have the right pink.

3. No one; yes no one at all gave me a gold crown. Not even a gold star!

4. I was so sad I took up a hobby. Sewing. I bought heaps of fabric!

Because I’ve realised I don’t even like sewing, it was all pointless.

I’m back to weaving now. Wonder if I’ll be chatting to the postman again soon??
  • Want to enjoy your weaving more? I share tips and ideas freely. I may even make you laugh along the way. Get comfy, follow along and stay a while.

I’m a weaver. Artist. Traveller. Photographer. Bad*ss sassy weaver actually! Simple tools. Ashford rigid heddle. Gorgeous handwoven blankets, and 3 ground rules for my content! Basically, I’m just being totally REAL! Welcome along!
  • Tired of AI slop? Come follow along here if you want REAL!! They say wearing bikinis gets more followers, and AI can’t do that! I can though!

I’m totally real; and at times slightly unhinged. Committed, sometimes ridiculous. If you want weaving tips and to get some weaving mojo, here is your space! I may even make you laugh.
  • Thinking of weaving? A rigid heddle loom is a great start. I use a really big one with a very big shuttle. It’s a 48” @ashford_wheels_looms Rigid heddle loom.

I like to walk rather than sit to weave so this is the perfect size for me, so I can weave my blankets.

Come follow along to see what I weave using this very big shuttle. I may even make you laugh along the way.

3. Nobody, yes nobody gave me a gold crown. Not even a gold star!

Tired of AI slop? Come follow along here if you want REAL!! They say wearing bikinis gets more followers, and AI can’t do that! I can though!

I’m totally real; and at times slightly unhinged. Committed, sometimes ridiculous. If you want weaving tips and to get some weaving mojo, here is your space! I may even make you laugh.

Thinking of weaving? A rigid heddle loom is a great start. I use a really big one with a very big shuttle. It’s a 48” @ashford_wheels_looms Rigid heddle loom. I like to walk rather than sit to weave so this is the perfect size for me, so I can weave my blankets. Come follow along to see what I weave using this very big shuttle. I may even make you laugh along the way.

Four things I learned from one month not buying yarn for my weaving. Save this for your own reference!

1. Miss chatting to our postman about yarn.
2. Just don’t have the right yellow.
3. Nobody, yes nobody gave me a gold crown. Not even a gold star!
4. I was so sad I took up a hobby. Sewing. I’ve bought heaps of fabric!

So, because I’m not sure I even like sewing now, it was all pointless.

Back to weaving now. So looking forward to chatting to the postman again! 🤣

Come follow along to see what I weave with my next parcel!

Stuck for ideas for your weaving? Use what you’ve done! I’ve woven my memories from one of our roadtrips 100 year old vintage car style, where our goal was to drive from Bangkok to London. Made it through Thailand, Laos, Tibet, Kyrgyzstan and broke down there.. lol.. but that’s another story!

Follow for more weaving ideas and stories. I may even make you laugh!

Bold, sassy older weaver! I share freely all my weaving tips and ideas. Look around my space. Come follow along in my sometimes unhinged studio. Deeply committed to my art and weaving practice; but I may make you laugh.
