Walking the tundra in the snow- a childhood dream….

Year 6. Mrs O’hare. Ashgrove State School. Geography lesson and studying the tundra. I thought to myself – “One day I would love to walk across the tundra…” Nearly two weeks ago now was that day that my wish from over 40 years ago flooded my thoughts… as the snow flakes adhered to the backs of my woollen gloves and perched on my black rabbit hat like adornments on a Christmas tree.

I had a wave of emotion as the icy wind rushed past my cheek and my feet stepped carefully across the soft moist landscape. My childhood imaginary wish was manifesting. It was a little surreal. I was walking across the tundra in Greenland. I felt so privileged and humble.

Dave was leading a group of “fast/long walkers” at a landing on Ella Island. For each of the land excursions we had a choice of either a “fast/long walk”; a “medium walk”; or a “contemplative walk”. I was missing my running and gym so chose the “fast/long walkers” and I was so glad I did. Dave was our guide and we climbed up to this wonderful saddle in the ridge-line. It was magical. Another world of snow and ruggedness.

I left my ‘big’ cameras on the ship and carried with me my trusty Canon G16; because firstly it was snowing!!! 🙂 ; and secondly I was in a group of walkers who put their hand up to long walk up this mountain in the snow …. so my Leica’s stayed snug in our cabin. I have some snaps with snow spots melted on my lens which I didn’t notice for a while; but you can see by clicking here what my first walk through the tundra was like.

We spied an Arctic hare whose ears were gigantic. I found both purple and pink saxifrage flowering; which don’t usually flower at this time of the year – and Dave was quite excited about seeing. We were looking for Muskox – a primitive looking beast which had similarities to a yak…but with a face which was long, warrior like and imposing.

It is easy to see why the faces of the muskox were used as tribal symbols in the early civilisations in these areas; and the shamans used their features in their symbols. We did not however see any of them on this walk; but we did however see evidence of them through their droppings; footprints and their hair – Qiviut; which is the soft inner wool which sheds in lumps and lies in sparse patches across the landscape. This wool is collected and spun for small garments prized for insulating qualities; and now-days is extremely expensive.

Orange lichen was luminous. The hard gneiss rocks 1 billion years old were patterned with mosses and lichens. Small plants literally joined together the tapestry of the Arctic landscape.

On the Ocean Nova we had specialists in Geology; Ornithology (birds); Cetaceans (whales); Archaeology; and every day there were 2 talks given providing information which both Max and I found so interesting.

Setting foot on this rugged landscape was incredible. What I noticed and was a part of was the extreme environment; yet the fields of flora and lichen were exquisite; and they softened the harsh exposed rocks. I was starting to let myself go into another place of thought. I was beginning to breathe the cold air from the North Pole and clear my mind.

I am a Journeywoman. I live my life as an explorer. An adventurer. An Observer. An Artist. There is no differentiation between how I live my life and the art that is an expression of it. It is through my experience adventuring the unknown, that I learn more about myself. My aim through this connection is to live where my expression is fully in alignment with the essence of who I am. “In the field of Fine-Art Photography, Julie stands apart from others with the way she sees the world and expresses her connection within it. • I use a hook to warp my loom. What is the warp?. you may think!

Enjoyed my reel? Love you to follow and share with a friend. :)

More info on my hook and warp below..

The warp of a weaving loom is the structure and foundation of a woven fabric.

The warp consists of the longitudinal threads, and you can see in my reel the warp threads easily, because they are the long ones which don’t have any crossways threads, or weft threads yet.

I’ve woven with women all around the world on our remote travels, with examples here from Bhutan, Laos, Morocco and Tibet; and many of these looms are simple ones like mine.

Some of the warping methods are different, but the function of the warp for all looms - is universal.

I use a reed or sley/sleying hook in warping my loom. This hook helps me draw the thread through the reed slots so I can walk the desired length of yarn around the peg at the end of the table; and return; to use the hook to draw the yarn through the next reed slot.

Not sure whether anyone else other than myself reads captions; lol; but because I do, I will always add extra information here that I don’t include in my reel. All these words are from my own head!

This is only one step in the warping of a loom, so if you’ve enjoyed this reel and want to see what the next step is, love for you to follow and share in your feed or forward to a friend.

  • It’s officially winter so I can wear warmies.

I’ve just finished this beautiful knit, (yes a knitter as well as an hand weaver :)) the Leif cowl by Dianna Walla. @papertigerknits
I started it last year. It has taken me some time to finish!

I adore the pattern and have knitted about a dozen of them. It makes the perfect gift!

I love the colour changes in the yarn which is Dyed in the Wool, by @spincycle_yarns from shoutout to @skeinsisters

Can you see where I made a rather silly mistake? I don’t mind at all if you let me know! 🤣
I only realised when I bound off… but there was no need for me to frog/rip back or even worry. I had a big laugh to myself though.

All I need now is some cold weather!

If you’ve enjoyed this post, love you to follow me and send to a friend! :)

  • “Wow, you’re a weaver. Love to visit your studio Julie. What type of loom do you have?” I explain briefly .. “Oh”…. And then a loooooonggg pause.

Most people’s idea of a weaving loom is the equivalent of the Lamborghini of the loom realms; but mine is quite the opposite; yet produces luxury fabrics for my soulful handwoven blankets based on my adventurous journeys around the world.

I’m using what’s called a ‘rigid heddle loom’, by Ashford. @ashford_wheels_looms

It’s a simple loom and I can stand and walk instead of sitting. I’m a mover - lol; and this loom is perfect for me.

So, there is no need to be disappointed that my loom is ‘just a rectangle’.

A small number of pieces from my next Series will be available soon.

If you’ve enjoyed my reel, love you to follow and share it with a friend or repost on your feed; and for more and notification when pieces go online to purchase - tap Link in Bio!

My current series is founded on our wonderful time in Kolkata.

I loved Kolkata. The sounds. The colour. The warmth from others.

Each piece is unique. The rhythm of my hands and steps; the behaviour of the yarn; the decisions made in the moment rather than imposed in advance. As an artist, little is planned in my weaving.

I use a hook to warp my loom. What is the warp?. you may think! Enjoyed my reel? Love you to follow and share with a friend. 🙂 More info on my hook and warp below.. #artisanmade #madebyhand #handweaving #uniquegiftidea #fibreartist

It’s officially winter so I can wear warmies. I’ve just finished this beautiful knit, (yes a knitter as well as an hand weaver :)) the Leif cowl by Dianna Walla. @papertigerknits I started it last year. It has taken me some time to finish!  I adore the pattern and have knitted about a dozen of them. It makes the perfect gift!  I love the colour changes in the yarn which is Dyed in the Wool, by @spincycle_yarns from shoutout to @skeinsisters Can you see where I made a rather silly mistake? I don’t mind at all if you let me know! 🤣 I only realised when I bound off… but there was no need for me to frog/rip back or even worry. I had a big laugh to myself though. All I need now is some cold weather! If you’ve enjoyed this post, love you to follow me and send to a friend! 🙂 #handknitting #handknitted #knittinginspiration #madebyhand #havingfun

“Wow, you’re a weaver. @ashford_wheels_looms It’s a simple loom and I can stand and walk instead of sitting. #artisanmade #madebyhand #handweaving #uniquegiftideas #fibreartist

Here I’m weaving with my rigid heddle loom, where I stand and walk rather than sitting to weave my artisan handwoven blankets, all based on my experiences travelling the world.  Watch to find out more about a ‘pick’ and PPI.. and how the sloooooow process of repetitively moving the shuttle from side to side, creates beautiful items which bring comfort and warmth. I respect and value the traditions of hand weaving, and enjoy feeling my feet and repetitive steps on these beautiful handwoven rugs from @the_rug_shop If you’ve found this interesting, love for you to share and repost with your friends. Come follow me on my weaving journeys. Link in Bio.  New Series pieces available soon! #artisanmade #weaver #handwovenluxury #uniquegiftideas #madebyhand

Memories of my experiences of journeys across the world come to life again in my studio. My current series is founded on our wonderful time in Kolkata. I loved Kolkata. The sounds. The colour. The warmth from others. Here in my studio, nothing is rushed. Each piece is woven carefully with intention. Each piece is unique. The rhythm of my hands and steps; the behaviour of the yarn; the decisions made in the moment rather than imposed in advance. As an artist, little is planned in my weaving. Come and read my journal notes from Kolkata and have a peek side my studio. My E-Zine is now available. Link in Bio. #uniquegift #slowmade #kolkatastreets #artisanmade #interiordecor

Reveal time! The city of inspiration for my current series is Kolkata; starting with my memories of Mullik Ghat Flower Markets. Kolkata was the beginning of our drive in our 1923 Vauxhall through India, Bhutan and Myanmar. I had the most wonderful time in Kolkata. Have you ever been there?
