When heat meets water – in Iceland…what a show!

When heat meets water - how amazing is the beauty in this alchemy! I've been having the most wonderful time diving into my photographs over the past weeks... interspersed with reading about the history of Russia, Mongolia and Europe!!! I came across a couple of photographs from Iceland last year when we went to near the Vatnajökull Glacier where the lava from the recent eruption of the Holuhraun Volcano runs close to a waterway, heating the water to create steam and creating the most incredible landscape. The cumulation of images…greater than the sum of the individual items – A body of work.

Ok.... 2 weeks to go before we leave for our drive in Penny through India, Bhutan... and beyond... :-) (I will keep you updated when I can with sporadic wi-fi :-) ).... and time is running out for me to share the beginnings of a conceptual body of work which really excited me whilst I was taking the photographs in Greenland.
As a visual artist and philosopher ... my 'bodies of work' are conceptually based; meaning they have a voice. I have a voice through my work. I have a voice which is expressed through not only each single image and artwork; but amplified through the collection as a whole.
Over the past few weeks I have shared some images which are of a 'narrative' nature. Some go a little further and express an emotion I was feeling .... or were catalysts for my introspection. For me - a body of work is different.
A body of work is a collection of images which has a voice...which expresses a vision; a philosophy; poses questions; reflects a unified thought or concept.... and is where the collection of images and artworks is far greater than the sum of the individual items......MORE....

Wonderful waterfalls in Iceland…

It has been a particularly wet summer this year here in Iceland with average day time temperatures well below the norm.... and the total number of 'sun hours' for the month of August being a grand total of 17hours in much of Iceland. That isn't much sun at all hey!!! Consequently there is a LOT of water running from the mountains - sliding and meandering toward the cold oceans surrounding Iceland. For those who know me - waterfalls are not a favourite subject matter of mine... but this time there was a power within them which I had not felt anywhere else before. There was something quite special about the clarity of the water....and the way it fell from the layers in the volcanic  topography. Mountains and moisture….. Iceland

Mountains and moisture!!! The landscape in Iceland is spectacular! There is always a geological feature in view..... and we have found there is also a lot of moisture... whether it be in the form of clouds; mist; ocean or moisture running out from the ground in either raging waterfalls or trickling streams. Iceland has on average a 79% chance of precipitation on any given day... so that means a lot of cloudy misty and showery days! We have experienced about the average which has provided an opportunity for me to experience the landscape in a more mysterious way than if the geological features were exposed in full sunlight. Experiencing my own little ritual in Iceland … And journeys ahead !

Some find a spiritual connection through a pilgrimage to Sacred places such as the headwaters of the Ganges ..and here I find myself in my own - yet unplanned pilgrimage of sorts; as I lay with hot surges of heated glacial water gently caressing my body...with the full moon hanging behind the misty clouds and steam being carried in the icy highland wind. I lay immersed with hot steaming water flowing over my body - crystal clear water which had probably fallen as rain hundreds of thousands of years ago ( perhaps longer but will need to check my facts on this one :) and was suspended in a glacier - now in a melting river flowing under the frozen ice; heated by a lava flow which we were told by the Ranger was its first birthday today of its new flow. I am privileged to be in Iceland. We have been in Iceland for a few days now..and today it the first day.....
