Mentoring

Do you need that bit of feedback and extra guidance from a trusted person to help you take your images up to the next level?

I am able to do this by assisting you in your photographic practice to more clearly communicate your vision.

Is your photography or photo-media practice important enough to you to invest in professional expertise and guidance?

If so, I offer my professional mentoring consultancy, to support and develop the value you place in expressing yourself and your vision through your photography.

Have a read through my mentoring flyer

Investing in equipment is considered mandatory and not given a second thought, but investing in valuable and necessary expertise and guidance offered by trusted and respected teachers and mentors is equally as important.

I dedicate myself wholeheartedly as a mentor; to listen, observe, discern and to offer suggestions and guidance.

Through this programme I offer exclusive, personalised, confidential, one-on-one feedback, tuition, discussion and guidance in relation to your photo-media practice.

Whether your photo-media is of the environment you are in, is staged or directed, or heavily manipulated or transformed; I am able to mentor you to help you to create images which communicate more effectively.

Learning how to ‘listen’ to what your own images say is imperative if you want to be able to express your vision through them. All aspects of your photo-media practice will be considered in assisting you to create more powerful, expressive images.

Because I only mentor a small number of students, and application process is required.

Please refer to my brochure and contact me by email for application guidelines.

About the Author: Julie
I am a Journeywoman. I live my life as an explorer. An adventurer. An Observer. An Artist. There is no differentiation between how I live my life and the art that is an expression of it. It is through my experience adventuring the unknown, that I learn more about myself. My aim through this connection is to live where my expression is fully in alignment with the essence of who I am. “In the field of Fine-Art Photography, Julie stands apart from others with the way she sees the world and expresses her connection within it. Julie Stephenson’s photographs are sublime. Her work is an expression of her deep connection; and a gift to the world.”

  • It’s not all calm - weaving. If you forget a step - everything can go BOOM! and disintegrate.

Hemstitching is a vital and often missed step in weaving. Yes ‘stitching’ Note to self!
  • The tutorials show perfectly aligned knots and smooth, effortless tension.

The reality is just standing at the loom wrangling with individual threads until the structure finally cooperates.

It’s fiddly. It’s clumsy. No gauges. Just tension by intuitive feel. On repeat.

If you’re looking for mechanical clinical perfection; not here. But if you want creative inspiration; well that’s a whole different story!
  • Weaving is sooo relaxing!
Really?? Lies!

Lashing the warp is messy. Clumsy.
Knots not even. If you like things lined up exactly, this could do your head in!

Wrangling a clump of cord to lash is NOT relaxing!

Let’s set the record straight!
For you? Weaving lies?
What’s the consensus?
  • Weaving is sooo romantic!
Really?? Lies!

Lashing is messy. Clumsy.
Knots not even. If you like things lined up exactly, this may actually be a real challenge!

Wrangling a clump of cord to lash the warp is NOT romantic!

Let’s set the record straight!
Spread the word!
  • Turns out, lashing the warp is messy.
Studio notes from today:
1. It looks chaotic until the last knot is tied.

2. Nothing is exactly even, so if you like things lined up exactly, this may be a challenge.

3. Trust your hands and the tension when you do the second pass to put tension on the cord - even when the knots look like a mess.

Save this if you’re navigating the clumsy phase too and return to see how it all turns out.
  • What else didn’t you know when you wanted to start weaving? Come and find out! Follow along.
  • ‘Lashing the warp’ on my rigid heddle loom was once a surprise term I didn’t know was a thing; back-in-the-day, when I first started weaving.

If you’re starting weaving - for new terms; and if you’ve been weaving for ages and need some creative inspiration; come follow along!
  • The needle didn’t come with my loom. Apparently I was supposed to know sewing was part of weaving! Lol

I love stitching now and it’s a wonderful part of my weaving process.

I have a favourite needle, so grab yours and bring a bestie to Hemstitch with me; and come follow along with my crazy weaving journeys!
