‘The Shape of Cold’ Antarctica published and available online now!

I am excited to have published 'The Shape of Cold' a beautiful artwork of the collection of my black and white photographs from my first journey to Antarctica in 2014. This book is an expression of my connection with Antarctica; of the way the hand of Nature sculpts 'the shape of cold'. There is a very special relationship revealed with the pairing of images on adjoining pages; which gives this book a quality which is beyond just a collection of exquisite photographs. This book is available to be purchase now on my online store

She Glides…

With delicate grace
exposing in rawness her strength and beauty
exquisite beneath,
she glides in the stillness
yet she was not truly seen.

Those moments of glimpses are now passed
into memories
and melt
into time.

Getting to Antarctica – by plane then ship…. Not at all easy… and Nature calls the game!

I'm back to Australia now after an incredible journey to South America to climb Volcan Osorno and travel once again to Antarctica. These have been incredibly privileged experiences..and ones which have enriched my life; and I feel I have returned in some ways quite changed. Nature called the game for us this time and due to fog and lack of visibility on the runway at Frei Station, our planned departure was delayed for two days because we couldn't land. Every few hours we all gathered in the function room to be advised of the current weather conditions and the pilots decision whether we had a window to land ..... or not...

“The Shape of Cold” – Antarctica Book

I have had this project on the back burners for 2 years… and recently I made a commitment to see if I could actually achieve any goals that I had set myself; and endeavoured to complete a book of my experiences in Antarctica in 2014 – before my next trip to Antarctica…which is today !!!! and I have self published my book “The Shape of Cold”. I am really excited about this collection of images and how my experience has translated into this beautiful compilation and artwork in the form of a book. I am feeling quite excited for when I return in a month – to be able to hold my first sample copies in my gentle hands. I will post some images of the books after they arrive.

Antarctica New Perspectives : Even in the Darkness

Even in the darkness and the varying shades of the grey of uncertainty elements can emanate light and have an inner glow which is eternal with the strength of presence and resilience. Antarctica has provided me with the palette of my own experience to listen to the wisdom which emanates from something which is beyond me. Revisiting these images has enabled me to recall some of those insights again for myself.   There is a beautiful private gallery just for subscribers….so if you would like to see more images in this series… you can subscribe easily here 🙂

Antarctica New Perspectives – …..Relationship

Quietly..... over time.... silent change....
Looking at the relationships between elements can for me bring dynamism to a medium which is in literally 2 dimensions.
In your own photography, why not have a play with placing images together and see what narrative/emotion/movement/feeling develops within you, as a whole new perspective is created as a result of juxtaposing two or more ways of seeing.
I have found that

Antarctica new perspectives – on Landscape.

Antarctica Landscape??? …or not??? Have you ever questioned what you have seen??? Have you ever seen something and then upon further inquiry be led to further inquiry….which has led you to question your perception of reality even more??? This particular image invites me to inquire … explore… challenge my perception of what I originally saw. I invite you to to do the same.

Antarctica…. new perspectives

Have you ever had something revealed to you and it challenge your perception of the way you think it is?? I have been re-visiting my archives; and in my Antarctica photos there are images which challenge my memory of what I think Antartica is like… or “should” be like. When one thinks of Antarctica – ice; cold; blue; white; penguins; isolation; space; are just some of the words which may come to mind. As I have been browsing through my images I am seeing differently than how I have seen before. Perhaps ‘time’ is taking a role in this – as it has been 14 months since experiencing myself in Antarctica. Perhaps time has given me the space to see things differently…and present a new reality which I had not envisaged before. My perception is being challenged by a new way of seeing…. and what I am seeing in front of me is different that what I thought….remembered …and even imagined. Over the coming weeks… (perhaps even intermittently over the coming months 🙂 )… I would like to share with you some images which offer a new perspective of Antarctica.

Explorers…Antarctica…. Setting the scene; planes, boats, ice and VERY cold water!!!!!

We were explorers...adventurers in a place where Nature runs the show. In Antarctica plans are temporary. Fluid. Changeable. At best, plans in Antarctica are the sketch of a 'wish list'...pencilled in itineraries and schedules and deadlines; all overlaid with ice and wind and snow....and fog. Max and I had chosen a trip

What part of me is……. ???? … (catalyst from experience in Antarctica)

Well... Antarctica seems such a long time ago now and seems to be fading in my memory; but still such a strong part of me and my experience.....and remains such a catalyst for me asking myself the question... "What part of me is.... ??"

skeinydipping

I looked down and saw my hands. Hands which have t I looked down and saw my hands. Hands which have touched; have loved; have created; have worked; have nurtured. My hands.

I looked down and saw on my wrist and fingers items from around the world which have so many stories; items which have all been created from the heart and made by the hands of others.

I looked down and saw beautiful yarn. Yarn which has been handled carefully through shearing, dyeing, skeining, balling; and now being knit in my beautiful hands.

My hands are one of my gifts. This year I’ve really missed the touch of another with my hands, to feel the heart of another through my fingertips; but so grateful and love my hands which touch and feel; work and play!

What do you see when you look at your hands?

My life is wonderful… and I have so many stories My life is wonderful… and I have so many stories. I’ve had adventures on all continents. Slept being rocked by the sea; felt the ice on my skin in both polar regions, and felt the silence of the deserts. I’ve walked stone steps in monasteries at altitudes where each step I’ve taken consciously and mindfully; focussing on treasuring every molecule of oxygen in the rarefied atmosphere.

COVID has paused those adventures, but I draw upon my experiences as I navigate adventuring my days in a different way, on our ‘home range’.

I recall my steps in Tibet as I walk through our bushland. I am mindful and conscious of my surroundings. I listen. I feel. I feel happy here. I am content.

My new stories may not hold the same experiences of connection with others; and may not be of extreme challenges or crazy things  (which I am rather prone to doing! 🙂 ) but they are not less wondrous… as I smell the warm eucalyptus waft from under my feet.

I weave my stories, and this story is of my personal journey on my daily walk through our bushland.
You can see some of my other woven stories on my website - link in profile.

How do you express your life’s stories?

“....The Assookinakii cowl was created for those “....The Assookinakii cowl was created for those times in your life when you need a meditative and healing knit. Assookinakii (ass-s-oo-kin-uh-k-EE) means ‘healer’ in the Blackfeet language, thank you to Cut Woods School in Browning, MT for the tradish language support”. –  Candice from @thefarmersdaughterfibers

Knitting this beautiful cowl by Candice from @thefarmersdaughterfibers for @sistersunitedmt ; WAS healing.

As my hands gently formed the repetitive stitches I reflected on the word ‘Assookinakii ‘ - healer. I am a healer. I don’t understand it. It’s something unseen. Something within me which has been recognised by Ngangkari and ‘clever men’ here in Australia; and shaman and healers around the world as we travel. This recognition always has caught me by surprise; as I seem to walk a line between two worlds.

As the stitches slipped from one needle to another and the beautiful colours of @spincycle_yarns revealed themselves; in the pauses between the stitches I heard a voice whispering to continue to seek connection with the natural world and listen deeply.

What has been healing for you this year?
