It’s officially winter so I can wear warmies. I’ve just finished this beautiful knit, (yes a knitter as well as an hand weaver :)) the Leif cowl by Dianna Walla. @papertigerknits I started it last year. It has taken me some time to finish!  I adore the pattern and have knitted about a dozen of them. It makes the perfect gift!  I love the colour changes in the yarn which is Dyed in the Wool, by @spincycle_yarns from shoutout to @skeinsisters Can you see where I made a rather silly mistake? I don’t mind at all if you let me know! 🤣 I only realised when I bound off… but there was no need for me to frog/rip back or even worry. I had a big laugh to myself though. “Wow, you’re a weaver. Love to visit your studio Julie. What type of loom do you have?” I explain briefly .. “Oh”…. And then a loooooonggg pause. Most people’s idea of a weaving loom is the equivalent of the Lamborghini of the loom realms; but mine is quite the opposite; yet produces luxury fabrics for my soulful handwoven blankets based on my adventurous journeys around the world. I’m using what’s called a ‘rigid heddle loom’, by Ashford. @ashford_wheels_looms It’s a simple loom and I can stand and walk instead of sitting. I’m a mover - lol; and this loom is perfect for me. So, there is no need to be disappointed that my loom is ‘just a rectangle’. A small number of pieces from my next Series will be available soon. Here I’m weaving with my rigid heddle loom, where I stand and walk rather than sitting to weave my artisan handwoven blankets, all based on my experiences travelling the world.  Watch to find out more about a ‘pick’ and PPI.. and how the sloooooow process of repetitively moving the shuttle from side to side, creates beautiful items which bring comfort and warmth. The warmth from others. Here in my studio, nothing is rushed. Each piece is woven carefully with intention. Each piece is unique. The rhythm of my hands and steps; the behaviour of the yarn; the decisions made in the moment rather than imposed in advance. As an artist, little is planned in my weaving. Reveal time! The city of inspiration for my current series is Kolkata; starting with my memories of Mullik Ghat Flower Markets. Kolkata was the beginning of our drive in our 1923 Vauxhall through India, Bhutan and Myanmar. I had the most wonderful time in Kolkata. Have you ever been there? My remote journeys and experiences continue to move through me as I weave.  Although weaving involves repetitive tasks, my movements are intentional and connected to my spirit, memory and experiences.
